Get started with a cisco network device

To start working with a Cisco device you need to access it somehow. You can configure it via the console port or via telnet.

1. For accessing the network device by using the console port you will need a rollover cable that normally gives you a serial edge and an RJ-45 edge.

Cable

Attach the serial edge of the cable, to the serial port of your PC or laptop and the

RJ-45 edge to the console port of the cisco network device.

Then open the application of HyperTerminal (Start –> Programs –> Accessories –> Communications –> Hyper terminal) if you use windows in your workstation or in the other hand if you use Linux you can try the Mini-com program. Next do the appropriate setup of the hyper terminal. In the image below you can see the correct setup.

Hyperterminal

Press the OK button of the hyper terminal, turn on the network device and you will see the screen with the command prompt.

Now you are ready to type commands and configure the device.

2. You can also access the device by using telnet.

Open the command prompt interface on your PC (Start Run Type “cmd” –> Type “telnet and the Ip address of the device that you want to access”). For example type: telnet 10.0.0.138 like the image below

Telnet

Now you are ready to configure your device. On one of the next articles i will write about the basic configuration commands and the basic show commands so you will be able to know what to do when you enter at the router’s interface. Enjoy!!
